How Do I Qualify for the Masters World Championships?
A lot of folks have reached out with questions about how to qualify for the Masters World Championships. To make it easier for people to understand the process, we wanted to be transparent about the process.
Throw in a sanctioned Highland Game.
This means a game where the majority of events are thrown, and not just a backyard games where 2-3 events are thrown by 1-2 athletes to “get scores in”
Ensure your scores are recorded on heavyathlete.com by the Athletic Director. While Heavy Athlete is not the sanctioning body, it is currently the most comprehensive database of scores for all Highland Games.
Not in the US? You can still have your scores tracked in Heavy Athlete! Ask your Athletic Director to enter the scores on Heavy Athlete. Please remember that SAI is neither the owner or developer of HeavyAthlete.com, so we can’t speak on their behalf.
However, they were the first and only platform willing to create a public rankings page to help identify athletes for Masters World Championships as well Women's Lightweight US Nationals, Women's Lightweight Worlds, and Celtic Classic. Because of that initiative, the site has been adopted by these and other organizations as a trusted, centralized source for global rankings.
It is the responsibility of each Athletic Director to ensure that their athletes’ scores are entered—either by doing so personally or by designating someone to handle it on their behalf. When an AD does not fulfill this responsibility, it unfortunately becomes a disservice to the athletes who have worked hard to compete, and deserve to have their performances recognized on the global stage. There are great video tutorials on HeavyAthlete.com to walk you through the process!
Athletes are encouraged to speak up and have their voices heard if their scores are not being submitted. Open communication helps ensure that everyone’s efforts are represented accurately and that the ranking system remains fair and transparent for all involved; we encourage anyone with ideas on better tracking for international scores and rankings to join the SAI Sounding board by emailing helpsai@scottishathleticsint.org
You MUST claim your profile on heavyathlete.com to be considered and ensure you are being ranked correctly
Approximately 16 weeks before the games, a report will be run and the top 20 athletes will be notified of their rankings.
Scottish Athletics International will send invitations to the top 12 athletes in each class contested at the Masters World Championships.
Athletes will have 7 days to accept their invitation by paying for their registration.
After 7 days, the alternates from the list will be invited, and have 4 days to accept by paying for their registration, and down the line until the class is filled.
If spots open due to injury or inability to attend the games for any reason, alternates will be invited up to 30 days before the games.
No invitations will be issued less than 30 days before the games to ensure athletes have adequate time to arrange their travel and prepare to achieve the minimum opening heights.
