Updates to Sheaf Toss
Headline: SAI Updates Sheaf Toss Weights for Masters Athletes Age 60 and Over
Scottish Athletics International (SAI) is changing the sheaf toss weights for its 60 and over Masters divisions. Effective Jan 1st 2027, men age 60 and over will throw a 12 lb sheaf, and women age 60 and over will throw an 8 lb sheaf.
What is changing
The updated weights apply to all 60 and over age groups in SAI sanctioned competition, including Masters championship events. Weights for athletes under 60 are not affected by this change.
Why we made the change
This update was driven by several factors.
1. The other weights have already moved on. The weights used for Weight for Distance, and therefore Weight Over Bar, were changed more than five years ago. The sheaf toss weight for the 60 and over divisions was left behind, and this brings it back in line.
2. Athletes have been asking. For over three years, we have been asked repeatedly to change the sheaf weight. This change reflects what our athlete community has been telling us.
3. Many games have already adopted it. Numerous games, especially in the Northeast, are already using these weights. Many athletes had no idea that this was not the weight used at championships. Aligning our championship standard with what athletes are already throwing at their local games removes that confusion.
4. It is easy for games to adopt. The 12 lb sheaf is already commonly available, so games only need to add one new implement to be compliant.
What athletes and meet directors should know
Athletes should begin training with the new weights now so they are ready for January 1st 2027 effective date.
Athletics directors should make sure the correct sheaf weights are on hand for the 60 and over divisions.
Judges and officials should confirm the updated weights before the start of the event.
Sheaf will not be included in the rankings for MWC 2027 due to this change.
This update is part of SAI’s ongoing work to support Masters athletes and keep our events fair, safe, and competitive. As always, we appreciate the feedback from our athlete community.
