Update: What the New 60+ Sheaf Weights Mean for Games and MWC 2027

This post adds to our earlier announcement about lowering the sheaf toss weights for the SAI MWC 60+ age classes (blog post). Under that change, men 60 and over will throw a 12 lb sheaf and women 60 and over will throw an 8 lb sheaf. We have received good questions since then, so here are the details athletes and games asked about most.

MWC 2027

The sheaf will not be used to decide rankings for MWC 2027. It will be used in future years. The Athletic Director for MWC 2027 is already aware of the change and will have the needed implements on hand.

What This Means for Other Games

The 12 lb sheaf for men 60 and over. The women's open division already throws a 12 lb sheaf, so every games should already have one of that size.

The 8 lb sheaf for women 60 and over. The 8 lb weight is a minimum. If your games only has a 10 lb sheaf, the same one used for the 40 to 60 age brackets, it works for the 60+ classes too, because 10 lb meets the 8 lb minimum. There is no maximum weight.

Why the Start Date Is January 1

We know not every athletic director will have an 8 lb sheaf right away. That is why we pushed the start date to January 1, so they have time to have one made and start using it. The date also gives us a clear range for rankings, because every website that posts results shows rankings based on a calendar year only if at all.
